The Y-Malawi Team
CPC is providing life and hope for a beleaguered region on the other side of the world. Our partnership will give back so much in terms of new relationships, deepening faith, Christian witness, and abundant hope. We have hardly taken the initial steps of a great adventure.
Y-Malawi is no longer a vision in the heart of one man and a growing possibility in the minds of church leaders across the country: this integrated partnership is now a moving and creative reality, sustained by hope and our commitment.
World Vision’s mission uses John 10:10 as a guide for the children we serve, and it seems to apply to the Y-Malawi mission as well – “Life in all of its fullness,” our vision for every heart, “The will to make it so.”
Be you an adult, child, grandchild, or grandparent family member - or just giving a gift to another - our hope and prayer is for each of us to experience this unique opportunity to help our world grow closer together.

Central Presbyterian Church has a long history of supporting life changing mission projects. In the last two years we have built on this legacy with renewed focus on hands-on missions. The people of Malawi, a nation in southeastern Africa, need our help. Like many African nations, Malawi has been ravaged by poverty, illiteracy and, most dramatically, AIDS. CPC has a plan to respond in an area known as Nkhoma, in central Malawi.
We are not alone in this project. CPC will team with other Presbyterian churches - La Jolla Presbyterian, Hollywood Presbyterian, San Clemente Presbyterian, First Presbyterian in Houston, Peachtree Presbyterian in Atlanta and First Evangelical Church Association - as well as World Vision, a relief and development organization, to launch the Nkhoma, Malawi Area Development Program (ADP). An ADP is intended to run for at least 15 years to set up infrastructure to enable deserving people to help themselves.
World Vision is a 50 year old faith based organization with a long standing track record for success. Last year alone this organization helped 100 million people in 99 countries. They accomplish these tremendous feats with the support of churches like CPC. More information on World Vision can be found on their web site www.worldvision.org. More information on Malawi can be found at www.wvi.org/wvi/country_profile/profiles/malawi.htm.
Start up cost for the Nkhoma, Malawi ADP is $170,000 and CPC's commitment is 10% of this total or $17,000. Our hope is to fund this amount thorough "extra commitment" giving. If you are interested in supporting this project please contact the church office at 908-273-0441.

Bolivia/Peru Mission Trip, 2006
On June 29th, 11 CPC members and friends embarked on a 12-day journey of spiritual transformation to South America’s two poorest countries, Bolivia and Peru. The team included Scheller Hinkle, Hayley Morgan, John Taylor, Rachel Christensen, Elizabeth Burke, Michael Christensen, Lee Ryden, Carolyn Taylor, Don Wahlig, Julie Saksa and Julie Richards. After months of spiritual and logistical preparation, we began our trip with a moving communion service on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Lima, Peru. We then visited a micro-enterprise sewing project begun by PCUSA missionaries Ruth and Hunter Farrell amid the grinding poverty of a hill-side shanty town called Lomas de Caledonia outside Lima. What a fabulous trip. The first 8-9 days was spent co-leading our Church mission trip to the Amistad Mission and its children’s village in the city of Cochabamba, with a two-day trip up into the mountains to visit a small indigenous village called Aramasi. The children of the Amistad Mission, most of whom were abandoned or orphaned, are, without exception, wonderfully open and warm. They crave attention and call all of us, generically, “Amigos” - friends! Spending time with them, playing, eating, worshipping, and celebrating special occasions like the group birthday celebration was one of the real highlights of our trip. The Summit Faith House is a home funded and built by seven Summit congregations. Each work day we teamed with one or two of our fellow Summit congregations. The mix was different each work day so, we had the chance to meet all of the Faith House volunteers. (more) School Supply Kits for Iraqi Children
Please join us in helping the soldiers of the 3-3 of the U.S. Army help the children of Iraq by preparing School Supply Kits. Each Kit will contain basic, badly-needed items that can make a world of difference to a child heading to school. Assembling standardized Kits ensures that each child receives the same number of the most needed items, facilitates customs clearance, and relieves volunteers and soldiers of the time-consuming and labor intensive process of sorting and allocating random donated items. Kits are popular among Iraqis, who often request them. (more) |
