Mission to Costa Rica

DESTINATION: Guapiles, a small city near Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. It is reached via bus trip from the capital, San Jose, traveling through Costa Rica’s pristine scenic rain forest.

ACTIVITIES: Church Building / Relational Work. Assist a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Costa Rica in constructing church buildings. Tour the rain forest.

ACCOMMODATIONS: The team will stay in Guapiles in a hotel with many, though not all, amenities. The hotel is located 15 minutes by bus from the church construction sites in nearby rural areas.

AVAILABILITY: There is room for 15 people to go on this trip. Deposits will be received in January and will be required to reserve your place on the trip.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Teens through seniors. A number of CPC senior high youth have already indicated interest in going. The work itself is varied in its physical demands. Those with moderate physical limitations should not be discouraged from attending as there is a need for both light work, with low or no physical involvement, and more physically-intensive work.

COST: Depending on availability of CPC budgetary funds and funding from CPC Mission Coffee sales and other sources, the out-of-pocket cost of this trip is estimated to be approximately $500 per person. Prospective attendees whose interest is not matched by their financial resources are encouraged to contact John Illian or Joel Montgomery.

NEXT STEPS: Deposits are required to reserve your space and these will be received in January. The group will begin meeting on a regular basis to learn basic Spanish, facts about Costa Rica as a country, specific aspects of the work to be performed, and exploring ways of making contact with local Costa Rican communities.
