Church Leadership

Session
Elders are the spiritual leaders of our church. Indeed the Greek term, "presbuteros", means elder: it is the word from which the name of our denomination is derived. The Elders form a board called the Session. This board is the foundation of all Presbyterian church government. The Session ensures the proper administration of the Sacraments, oversees all of the programs of the church that nurture our relationships with Jesus Christ, and cares for the proper administration of all the resources of the membership. The Commissions are under the leadership of one or more Elders. Twenty-eight to thirty-four Elders are elected to the Session by the congregation to serve three-year terms. An Elder may serve no more than two consecutive terms.

Benefits to the Church Family
Every organization needs leadership and so do the people of God. The Session discerns the vision and direction provided by God for our church family, respects Presbyterian government, assesses the needs of our church family and works together to ascertain the will of our Lord Jesus Christ to be all that we are created to be. This is a highly responsible job; it is also most rewarding. Elders who have served see how God uses their time and talents to create and energize the church.

Session Commissions - Structure and Responsibilities
A commission is a body established by the Session to oversee a particular part of the Church's life and ministry. Each commission will have the authority to carry out its mission and goals as approved by the Session and will regularly report its decisions and actions to the Session.

The Session of CPC is currently organized into seven commissions as follows:

  • Christian Education
  • Membership
  • Worship
  • Mission
  • Management and Administration
  • Finance
  • Buildings and Grounds

Commissions normally have committees and/or task groups to carry out specific tasks, make studies and recommend actions for approval by the commission.

Deacons
The Board of Deacons works to provide our congregation and neighbors with a ministry of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.
